HISTORY OF EL PASO TEXAS
FLAGS ACROSS AMERICA

Old Glory Memorial

On September 11, 2001, a group visited the corner of Diana and Gateway North, with the idea of erecting a 180 foot flag pole. The plan was presented to the El Paso Community College Board of Directors and permission was granted to lease the property.

The Flag Board of Directors organized on September 6, 2002, to start fund raising to build the flag pole. On December 3rd, 2003, the flag pole was erected and the first 40 by 80 foot US flag was raised. The flag is flown 24/7. A 50 x 100 foot flag was purchased June 11, 2006. The big flag, 50 state flags, 6 territorial flags, 6 service flags, and the POW/MIA flag is flown on all major holidays.

The “Flags Across America” program continues today. The cost of maintaining the site, utilities, insurance, repairs and replacement of flags is a huge expense. The El Paso Texas Flags Across America is a 501(C)(3), and is NOT funded by any City, County, State or Federal programs. It is solely funded by the generous donations from the patriotic community.

February 2020, after suffering many cracks over the years due to the El Paso strong winds, and welded too many times, the pole cracks were beyond repair and needed to come down.  "Operation Replace the Pole" began raising funds  to replace the pole.

October 5, 2021, Symonds Flags and Poles Inc., erected a 180 ft. pole at a cost of 150,000.00.
